MIDAS Configurator Introduction
HPOM administration has never been easier!
HP Operations Manager is a powerful tool for event management, but administration of large numbers of templates and nodes is anything but pleasant. The major issues center around user management, transparency, usability, and version control.
MIDAS Configurator solves all of those problems.
Midas Configurator is a web-based configuration GUI for HPOM. In addition to all features provided by Midas Documentor , it offers the complete set of configuration capabilities - all in your regular web browser. Plus, lots of functionality and usability enhancement over the classic HPOM administration GUI, for example:
Waiting for the opc_adm user
Wait no more. MIDAS Configurator removes this restriction and lets you
perform administrative tasks by any number of users. The granular user
model lets you specify Read, Write, and Execute privileges down to
template or node level.
The following example illustrates a database
expert role, which permits DB Administrators to maintain their
database-related policies:
Looking for a policy?
This can be a tedious job. MIDAS Configurator gives you not one, but two methods to find policies or any other configuration item:

The index-based search function immediately finds everything matching your search criteria in one or more HPOM/U servers.

Shows policies matching name and/or type. The same real-time query function can be used to locate any other HPOM object.
For example, find all HPOM nodes matching a certain IP address pattern can be done as follows:
New SPI version
Nothing is a greater headache than trying to migrate two
years of SPI modifications to the new release. Now you can compare policies and policy groups at the click of a mouse and see changed, new, deleted, or moved conditions. And
you can easily copy your modifications to the new policy.

Roll Back to last version?
Not an easy task. There is no support for version control in HPOM/U, and processes built on top of HPOM/U are manual, error-prone, and difficult to enforce.
MIDAS offers seamless integration to CVS version control.
Checking an HPOM object into CVS is as easy as shown in the following example:
The CVS repository can be reviewed, checked-in revisions can be compared with and checked out to any registered HPOM Server.
Reverse and negative queries
This set of MIDAS features helps identifying unused element, which nobody dares to remove "because they might be still in use somewhere" and shows reverse views.
- Reverse views means displaying object relationships, which cannot be seen in HPOM at all. For example, did you ever tried to
- show all parent policy groups a policy is member of?
- all nodes or node group a policy or policy group is assigned to?
- see the resulting set of policies assigned to a node with all group (node and policy groups) resolved?
- Negative queries are designed to help keep your HPOM/U configuration consistent and clean. With the click of a mouse, you can find:
- Message / Node Groups not in a responsibility matrix
- Policies and Policy Groups with no assignments
- Nodes and Node Groups with no assignments
- Nodes not assigned to an operator

Other usability enhancements
MIDAS Configurator provides lots of other usability enhancements making the life of the HPOM Administrators easier, for example:
- Viewing multiple conditions while editing a policy
- Copy/paste of conditions between policies
- Selectors allowing to choose from Nodes, Message Groups, Match Variables while editing a policy
In addition, all convenience features of modern Web browsers are available for free:
- Multiple tabs and windows with different views, possibly connected to different HPOM Servers
- Navigation, history, bookmarks
- Printing
- Auto-complete and spell-check
Security
No need to install any software, except a web browser (which you have anyway, don't you). Communication can be secured via HTTPS. In addition, there is no need anymore to log on to the HPOM Server nor to even have root access there.
