Overview
|
|
The Distribution Manager for HP Operations Manager for Unix (Distribution Manager) provides functionality to improve the distribution capabilities of HPOM for Unix through a graphical user interface, particularly in the area of distributing configuration (templates) and instrumentation (actions/commands/monitors). Although standard HPOM allows you to initiate these activities, users only receive limited feedback and can never be sure whether the action succeeded or not. Moreover, there is no way to find out at a later point in time which distributions were successful and which are still pending.
The Distribution Manager displays pending distribution jobs in real-time and colours them to indicate any unexpected delay in execution. It does not matter who actually initiated the distribution. Pending distribution jobs can be cancelled or re-initiated.
In addition, new distribution jobs can be created for immediate execution or scheduled for a later time.
The combination of a real-time overview of all distribution jobs (both completed and pending) and the ability to schedule new jobs gives the HPOM Administrator and Template Administrator a valuable extension to HPOM for Unix. Distribution Manager also simplifies and streamlines both the administration and the troubleshooting of HPOM for Unix, which in turn improves overall reliability.
An example session looks like this:
|
|
The upper table shows jobs that are still pending. The coloring
indicates the time range since the jobs were initiated. The color green
means either that the elapsed time since the initialisation of the job
is considered to be acceptable or the job is still being executed (30
secs by default): the other colors follow the meaning as used in HPOM,
for example; red=critical, etc. Each row represents the jobs found for
one single node sorted by the different element types, for example:
templates, actions, commands, monitors, nodeinfo, and
MoM-configuration. The first columns shows the target node as node name
or IP address (if the address could not be resolved).
The lower table shows scheduled jobs which will be initiated at a later time. See chapter Job scheduling
for details about the capabilities. Here the color coding shows
scheduled jobs in green, if they are due at a future time or are
repeating, whereas the red color indicates a time in the past. This may
happen if a scheduled distribution could not be executed successfully.

Language support
|
|
Different languages are supported and detected automatically - currently available are English and German. Other languages can be integrated easily by translating the language-dependent properties files.

|
Installation
|
|
The Distribution Manager must be installed on the HPOM Management Server system. The following system requirements must be met:
-
HP-UX 11.x or Solaris (as supported by HPOM for Unix)
-
HPOM for Unix 6.x or later
-
JRE 1.3 or later
-
2MB Disk space for installation, + 1MB for runtime data
-
15 MB RAM per GUI session or scheduler
|
|
HPOM Integration
|
|
After installing the Distribution Manager on the HPOM Management Server, a new application group, entitled "bes Utilities", appears in the HPOM Application Bank. The new bes Utilities application group contains the Application shown in the following graphic.
|
|
After installation, the GUIs can be started without any further
configuration by the HPOM Administrator. To make the GUI available to
other HPOM users, you have to assign the appropriate HPOM Application
desktop elements (see the HPOM documentation for details).
Scheduled distributions will be initiated by a
scheduler which will be integrated into the standard HPOM start
mechanism (ovstart/ovstop). This integration happens automatically
during installation of the Distribution Manager.

External software
|
|
The Distribution Manager contains and uses the following free software packages:
See /opt/OV/bes/external for license files for each package. The following statements are required by the according software packages:
This product includes software developed by the Apache Software Foundation (http://www.apache.org ).

Job scheduling
|
|
The Distribution Manager supports scheduling of distribution jobs. The job can be started either immediately or at a later point in time, possibly repeating (e.g. every night at 2am). Repeating schedules can be configured similarly to the Unix cron mechanism.
To start a new distribution job, use the Action -> Scheduled Jobs -> New ... menu which leads to the following window:
|
| Here you have to specify the target node, the type of distribution
elements (similarly to the HPOM Admin GUI but with a finer granularity)
and the start time. |
